That day we planned to go camping near Price Ranch in New Mexico. Price Ranch is a small grass strip in the northeast corner of New Mexico, below Mt. Dora MOA near to a small river. In the morning when I checked the weather I noticed a dryline perpendicular to our planned route of flight through Texas. Other than that dryline the current weather as well as forecasts looked very good so we decided to go and pay extra attention to any extensive vertically developed clouds along our route. Since it was a long way from Arkansas to New Mexico we left very early in the morning.
The flight was uneventful. After flying so many hours over mostly flat lands we were impressed by the canyon south of Amarillo.
Before flying to Price Ranch we wanted first to stop in Tucumcari (approx. 80 NM south of Price Ranch) to get some fuel. For the landing in Tucumcari Vince and I changed seats because of strong and gusty crosswind reported by Tucumcari’s ASOS. After short stop and refuelling in Tucumcari we were on our way to Price Ranch (Vince was piloting this leg). In the middle of the way we started realizing that it would start getting dark by the time we get to Price Ranch (which had no paved runways, no lights, etc.). On top of that Vince realized that the landing distance in Price Ranch was probably slightly too short for us as we had tanks full of fuel. In the end we decided to turn back and fly to Tucumcari. By the time we got back to Tucumcari it was already dark and no attendance at the airport (which didn’t matter anyway as they have a policy to not give courtesy cars overnight). We managed to get someone from Holiday Inn to pick us up from the airport. So instead of camping in the middle of nowhere we ended up spending that night in the Holiday Inn and having dinner in its in house restaurant.
